I found this link while surfing the internet and found it rather intriguing.
Has me thinking not only about holiday shopping but regular all-year-round consumerism as well.

In all honesty, I have pretty much operated on that wave length for many years now. It's not that I didn't get my kids gifts for Christmas (or birthdays, etc.) but I thought long and hard over WHAT I purchased - mainly because when you are raising 3 kids on less than $11,000 a year (yes this was back in the 80's, early 90's), with no health insurance, etc., watching what you purchase is a necessity -an absolute necessity! It still is! I did break down today and went shopping for a little while with my daughter & the two little ones - first time I have EVER gone shopping on the day after Thanksgiving since they made it into a major shopping event! I've felt for years now that all the hoopla of gifts - the more, the higher the price, etc - was going totally against the message we are supposed to have for the season. My motto has always been "Need, vs want" -not always one my kids appreciated then but they survived. My splurge today - bought a mini-digital camera for myself for all of $9.99 -and it works too! I can download from it to my computer and learn a little bit about digital photography (very little, I know but basics) and I'm not out an arm or a leg for it this way.
Best way I know to get people to "downsize" on the shopping is to have their income drastically reduced and you get forced into living a different reality.
Hey Mollygras. You sound like a damn commie. Out of control consumerism and Christian family values are what this country was founded on. Love it or leave it babe.

I'm super psyched about your digital camera purchase! I can't wait to see all the lovely pictures you're sure to post.
And as far as "living a different reality" goes, sooner or later our culture is going to have to make a much needed shift with our possessing and then disposing of "stuff". What we're doing now is alot like Dr. Suess's The Lorax -- YIKES!

"out of control consumerism and Christian family values" -- I think you need to take a road trip over to western PA's Moshannan Valley trash towns to see first hand the by-product of our much heralded consumerism and unchecked Christian family values. Yucky business I say.
